Important monumental works such as the 'Monument to the Heroes of the Air' in Bucharest, realized in collaboration with Lidia Kotzebue, or the 'Reliefs of the Portal of the Ministry of Justice' have established Iosif Fekete in the collective memory of the general public. But the artist has also turned his attention to other subjects and has worked in thematic cycles such as this one, a cycle dedicated to man and above all - to love. Through the couples he sculpts in stone or bronze, Iosif Fekete proposes a lyrical approach and unravels the mysteries of love in the platonic sense, while maintaining his status as an objective narrator. It therefore proposes the motif of the primordial couple 'Adam and Eve', ambassadors of eternal life, directly connected with genesis and the idea of continuity and cyclicity. He addresses the subject in other works: 'First Kiss' made in 1932, 'Spring', which dates from 1933, 'Passion', 'Gate of Longing' and 'Rhythms'. In each of these sculptures the artist focuses on arcs, juxtapositions and innocent connections meant to reiterate the idea of deep connections and endless love. In addition to sculpture, Iosif Fekete has also worked in painting and drawing and has produced a series of works inspired by the poetry of Nina Cassian. Here we recall 'Parallel Destinies' and 'Puberty', which bear the same date as the present work. Nina Cassian was, over the years, the muse of Ion Barbu, with whom she used to meet at Capșa for annotations on his volumes of poetry; but also of Marin Preda: With the latter, she will achieve a literary quid pro quo - she translates for him from French, he introduces her to the world of Russian prose. She was also the muse of her third husband, the American artist Maurice Edwards - an opera and theatre director as well as an actor - whom she met when she settled in New York. It is not surprising, therefore, that she also served as a muse for Iosif Fekete, whose works she would include in her collection.
