In Romanian painting, Marius Bunescu will remain known especially due to his manner of executing landscapes. The numerous trips he made served as inspiration for a long series of works that he grouped thematically within several exhibitions. His creation will go through, in stages, the academic realism of Munich and the French Impressionism. Encountering the works of artists such as Van Gogh, Cézanne or Delacroix opened the way for him to approach a new painting manner and a palette of colors different from the one he had previously used. As a recent graduate, Marius Bunescu will make his first attempts at landscapes on the Black Sea shore, in Constanta. He conveys clear skies or marked by clouds that foretell the storm, boats anchored or detached from the shore, floating at sea; but also the architecture of the buildings that surround the sea. Water becomes a fundamental element in this stage of the artist's work and oscillates between calm, static states, and the angry waves of the storm. He is also concerned with the problem of color, which he constantly re-visits and treats with meticulous care, solving the issue of light and color with evident ingenuity. In this work, the artist brings to the foreground a completely different geographical area, approaching, this time, the mountain plan. His trips to the Brasov area have resulted in a series of works dedicated to castles and medieval fortresses (we mention here Bran Castle or Rasnov Fortress, which become recurring subjects in his work). The place where he sets up his easel offers him, this time, an overview of the medieval borough. The castle rises majestic at the foot of the mountains, in the rocky atmosphere, shadowed by the density of the forest. The artist's work becomes a hymn dedicated to nature, in which he sprinkles, with his specific mastery, imposing architectural constructions. His brush's journey and the sureness of the line still preserve the remnants of academia learned at the Munich school.
