Engaging on topics and subjects with a deeply humanistic charge, Rudolf Schweitzer-Cumpăna is inscribed in the history of Romanian visual arts as a genuine painter of the village and the native peasant. His childhood spent in the midst of nature, in the rustic atmosphere of Cumpăna, is reflected through a diligent study of the life of Argeş county villagers. The artist will translate faces, costumes, gestures, and traditions into a series of frescoes dedicated to the rural space. Among his cherished themes are maternity, work, and home care or household chores, transcribed into landscapes, portraits, or genre scenes. The organic need to express himself in front of the easel is almost incessant – the artist working sometimes up to four-five works a day. The tumult and yet the tranquility of rural life are depicted in his specific plastic language, through means of expression that undeniably enrich the artist's themes. Rudolf Schweitzer-Cumpăna uses strong contrasts and bets on the incandescence of color. He transposes his emotional states into intense games of light and shadows and reveals to us the enlightening effect of color placed directly on canvas. He uses a generous, rich paste, which he applies in harmonious strokes in rapid, well-defined rhythms. He doesn’t idealize the image of the peasant, but presents the simple, ordinary man, with his emotional troubles and daily concerns. The drama of the artist's chromatic expressiveness is accentuated by his realistic vision. The woman caught during housework becomes a leitmotif in his work. Young or aged seamstresses, with scarves and headscarves, who frantically move their hands towards the completion of daily activities, are increasingly present in the artist's works. The focused gaze, directed downward, towards the wool and knitting needles; the white hair coming out from under the scarf in the same shades; the aged, but firm hands in their activity; or the black blouse contrasting with the furniture and background introduce us into the specific universe of the protagonist in the present work.
