Unlike other Romanian artists who followed both the Parisian and Munich paths and remained faithful to the cultural environment encountered in the former, Octav Băncilă will feel much more attracted to the bohemian environment of Bavaria. His work is situated at the boundary between the depiction of everyday life, with all its joys and tragedies, and the contemplation of allegories that oppose reality. With a multitude of works centered around the human being, Băncilă constantly asserts himself in Romanian art. Petunias, carnations, lilacs, peonies, roses, poppies or snowdrops give his canvases a chromatic implosion where the artist includes his entire creative pathos. Whether he is painting wild flowers or flowers found in his own garden, Octav Băncilă correlates the plant motif with human emotion and perspective. Visceral and repetitive strokes or the paste applied in thick layers become the technical features that are constantly found in the artist's work. This time, he adopts a more subdued color palette, where shades of pink, white or red prevail over the usual shades of ocher, cherry, or violet. The artist thus chooses to inscribe in the depth of the canvas the contours, volumes, and enticing colors of the roses. The diversity of forms and shades, as well as positioning and repetitions introduce us to a universe full of color. Floral paintings become true portraits of human emotion which the artist knew how to transcribe so well in inanimate elements.
