Andrei Cădere arrived in Paris in 1967, at the same time as the first minimalist and conceptualist exhibitions. Daniel Buren, Olivier Mosset, Michael Parmentier and Niele Toroni were just starting to promote the B.M.P.T. acronym. In 1970, Cădere took the decisive step towards breaking dogmas and conventions, turning his creation into a perpetual performance. The artist began with a strategy of "parasitism" of the institutional art system, displaying his unmistakable wooden bar at openings and meetings to which he was not invited, and then established himself as a well-known figure on the art circuit. The current photo, taken by Gianfranco Gorgoni, captures a moment of the 1976 performance, somewhere between 1pm and 5:30pm. The space was bounded by Houston and Canal St., where there were many shops, galleries and other commercial outlets. Every 30 minutes, the display point of the work changed and was indicated by a number, which corresponded to the street number where a commercial point was located. The message suggested was that any of the spaces visited, whether it was a grocery store, art gallery or clothing store, was perfect for displaying a piece of art, as it was not dependent on any privileged wall or space.
