One of the more significant representatives of Croatian visual Expressionism, Vilko Gecan (Kuželj, 1894 – Zagreb, 1973), was lifelong friends with the artist Milivoj Uzelac. In Gecan's early works, the influence of Miroslav Kraljević is visible. At the beginning of the First World War, he interrupted his studies at the Academy in Munich due to conscription and spent three years in captivity in Sicily where he also drew. In the following periods, Cubo-constructivism, German New Objectivity, intense color, the influence of Van Gogh in relation to color... dominate. In the 1930s, Gecan noticed the first symptoms of Parkinson's disease and began painting still lifes and landscapes. The oil on canvas "Portrait of a Girl" depicts a young woman with a clearly defined face in a seated position. Earth tones dominate, with red motifs of hair, lips, buttons, and belts that emphasize contrast. The background is flat, the clothes are simplified lines, and the portrait appears calm and collected, but somewhat distant.
