Stojan Aralica (Škare near Otočac, 1883. - Belgrade, 1980.) was a painter and graphic artist. After receiving his diploma from the Teachers' School in Osijek, as a self-taught painter, he makes portraits and icons to order in order to finance his painting studies. His earliest works are probably lost. As early as 1909, he attended private lessons in Munich and the following year he enrolled in the High School of Fine Arts in the same city. In the early stages, he mainly painted portraits and nudes under the influence of the Munich Academy and Secession. At that time, he was friends with Kraljević, Becić, Račić... Maturity in painting expression comes after his studies and life in France, especially under the influence of André Lhote, impressionism, fauvism. He increasingly brings landscapes and cityscapes to the canvas. He soon moves to Zagreb where he opens a private painting school. He paints Adriatic motifs with a direct coloristic expression. With the outbreak of World War II, he moves to Belgrade where he paints less, and only portraits, sketches, and studies, and after the war, he spends several years in Sweden where he painted Lapland landscapes of green-blue northern light. Restless in one place, a wanderer at heart, he considered many addresses home. He stayed in Prague, Rome, Florence, Paris, Spain, Morocco, Tunisia... And he exhibited in Zagreb, Belgrade, Paris, Prague, Sarajevo, even in Sweden. He left part of his works to the city of Otočac.
Oil on canvas brings a classic still life motive - a jug with flowers in an interior. The central motif is a green ceramic jug with a bouquet of multicolored flowers (yellow, red, white) that is placed on a table next to an open book and personal items, adding a dose of intimacy to the scene. The warm tones typical for Aralica, who is known for his life and creative optimism, dominate. The background is cooler shades of blue and gray which further emphasizes the vivacity of the flowers. The brush strokes are energetic, impasto. The painting is signed in the lower left corner. MČ
