Croatian painter and graphic artist Mirko Rački (Novi Marof, 1879 - Split, 1982) lived most of his life privately, withdrawn from politics and art life. He was the director of the then Modern Gallery (today NMMU), belonged to the Medulić group, and above all he educated himself in Vienna and Prague. He is known for his allegorical compositions under the influence of the Secession. In his works, he often explores the inner state of man, moral fractures and spiritual wanderings, creating scenes rich in metaphysical tension. Contrary to these dramatic themes, the attached portrait of a woman in profile reflects a calmer, more intimate approach, painted in a realistic tone and reduced color palette. Soft light shapes the face and hairstyle of the model, emphasizing the author's preference for classical clarity of form. The whole work appears calm and dignified, as if Rački wants to capture the inner peace and quiet presence of the woman, making this portrait a subtle and refined departure from his stronger symbolist achievements.
