PROVENANCE

K.H. Zambaccian collection

Arthur Verona's career in the interwar period was to be influenced to a considerable extent by his gradual retirement from the helm of the Tinerime Artistică (Artistic Youth), an institution of which he was the director until 1921. The withdrawal from the Tinerime was practically concurrent with the creation of the Academia Liberă (Free Academy), a school emulating the famous institutions of Paris. However, this stage also meant a liberation of Verona's painting, a style of painting that, even if still tributary to the village universe (post-Grigorescian), managed to impress by the technique achieved, in a post-impressionist style. Traditional subjects were to be reinterpreted by Verona, his cycles marking the life of the Bukovinians (wedding, baptism, Christian holidays) being appreciated and collected.
