The work is reproduced in 'Pictura romÃ¢neascÄ interbelicÄ' (Interwar Romanian Painting), Amelia Pavel, Meridiane Publishing House, Bucharest, 1996, under the title 'Interior with Oriental Rug', under cat. 33b.

Created in 1940, the present work continues the cycle of interiors that appear frequently throughout Gheorghe Petrașcu's work. From 'Interior with Woman in Pink' (1927) to 'Interior with Woman in Blue Coat on Sofa' (1935) to 'Interior (Studio Corner)' (1939), Petrașcu works in series dedicated to the family setting, with a deeply intimate atmosphere that reveals a part of his creative universe. The three works mentioned propose the motif of the interior - a corner of a studio in which the background is made up of a series of paintings, with the family portrait at the top of the work as the focal point. We also notice another recurring element - the sofa - on which the artist sometimes places his favourite female model (his wife Lucretia). The colourful cushions, frugally distributed, reappear with religiousness in the works dedicated to the motif and interweave the familiar atmosphere that the artist has often sought to recreate. Perspective is interchangeable and widens or narrows according to the painter's vision. Whether he composes his work vertically or horizontally, Petrașcu never shies away from cutting out of the room plan and keeping in his work only what he considers absolutely essential. From the top left-hand plan of the room, the artist will only allow glimpses of certain areas in his work. In the lower left-hand side, we no longer find the colourful armchair and coffee table present in so many other works, and the right-hand side, towards the door, narrows so much that we can no longer see the exit. It highlights, however, the vivid chromaticism that enhances the artist's creative contribution.
