The divorce was politically motivated. After the abdication of King Carol II in September 1940 and the establishment of the political regime dominated by General Ion Antonescu and the Iron Guard, the authorities began to publish racist and anti-Semitic laws that had tragic effects, up to the Holocaust. Samuel Mützner was of Jewish origin and therefore subject to anti-Semitic legislation. Rodica Maniu asked for a divorce so that she wouldn't have to suffer too.
