Robert Auer (Zagreb, 1873 – Zagreb, 1952) was a prominent Croatian painter, graphic artist and professor. Auer's education at the academies in Vienna and Munich during the 1890s enriched his painting with the spirit of secession, visible also in the work "Study with Figures". The work is a study for the famous canvas "Love", created in 1912, which completes the composition of the study and surrounds the lovers figure with a series of angelic, but also grotesque figures. Even in the contrasting colors of the background on the study, the symbolism of the later oil, tension and struggle of innocence and desire is indicated.
