Research information

The work was exhibited at the exhibition "1st Zagreb Circle", April 2 - April 15, 1958., Art Pavilion, Zagreb, reproduced under cat. No. 54.

Kamilo Ružička (Gacko, 1899. - Zagreb 1972.) was a Croatian painter, one of the founders of the artistic group Earth. He studied at today's Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb with F. Kovačević, M. C. Crnčić, and Lj. Babić. He refined his skills in Venice, Paris, Munich, Vienna. From Paris, he brought very modern cubism to the Croatian art scene. During the Earth phase, he painted social themes, and after leaving the Earth group, he began to build his creation on intimist colorism based on plastic modeling. The oil on canvas Going to Sinj is signed in the lower right corner, where it is also dated to 1957. Ružička portrays two robust men, who equally share the space of the picture, in folk costumes continuing his dedication to portraying rural everyday life. The men wear traditional shirts, red hats, and have flung a red jacket over their opposite shoulders, contributing to the balance of the picture. Their posture and facial expressions convey strength and connection to the land, while the background creates an impression of a rural landscape that is stylized and colored in darker tones. With broad and expressive brush strokes, Ružička gives the painting strength and expressiveness.
