Corneliu Michăilescu remains known for his Cubist and Surrealist work, being one of the few Avant-garde painters who have approached such techniques and themes. His beginnings were marked by Impressionist influences, and over time there were periods of abstraction or Surrealism. As regards the latter, he collaborated in 1933 with Dr. Gheorghe Marinescu, who helped him experience painting under the influence of narcotics. As for the concept used by the artist, we can speak of an alternation between the plastic expression of philosophical themes and subject paintings. The Cubist manner, which made him stand out during the 1920s is personalised by adopting a different chromatics than the one used by most followers of the movement. The friendship between Corneliu Michăilescu, Marcel Iancu and M.H. Maxy, which began during the peak of the Romanian Avant-garde, ended in 1935 because of political and aesthetic divergences, and that year the painter showed his works for the last time along with the other two. His departure from the group was not very beneficial to his artistic activity, and he also moved considerably away from the public through a conscious isolation process. The period 1936-1943 marks the re-orientation in the literary segment, with just a few appearances in the Official Salons. This painting comes from the end of the interwar period, when Michăilescu began to isolate himself from the Romanian artistic environment. Besides, his exhibitions came to an end in 1935. During the same period, the artist moved to Cernica, where he built a "gazebo house" and probably started his first literary attempts.
