Gheorghe Cristescu (1882-1973), nicknamed Plăpumarul (The Quiltmaker), was the first Secretary-General of the Communist Party of Romania, which he led from its establishment in 1921 until 1924. Arrested during the dictatorship of Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej, he was rehabilitated by Nicolae Ceausescu in 1971. The 1st of May postcard circulated in Bucharest in 1971.
