Ilie Năstase was persuaded by Horst Dassler to sign a contract with Adidas, in 1973. On the day he went to sign the contract, the Romanian athlete was the protagonist of a funny episode, arriving by mistake at Puma, a company based in the same town as Adidas, Herzogenaurach. More than 20 million pairs of sports shoes associated with Ilie Năstase's name have been sold since the sportsman was active. The collaboration between Adidas and Ilie Năstase continued for five decades.
