The Fiat 126 was introduced at the Turin Motor Show in October 1972 as a replacement for the Fiat 500. Most 126 models were produced in Bielsko-Biała, Poland, under the name Polski Fiat 126p, where production continued until 2000. In Poland, the car became emblematic and earned the nickname Maluch, meaning "Little One" or "Child". It eventually became an official model name in 1997, when the name Maluch was put on the back of the car.
