The legendary Russian miniature art, often crafted on exquisite lacquered boxes, will be studied in the context of the four main official miniature schools: Fedoskino, Palekh, Mstera and Kholui. Each of these 4 schools is located in the eponymous city, near Moscow. The craft of miniature art will be derived from the traditional art of icon painting, whose collapse will guide the artists towards a novel way of practicing their skills. Thus, beginning with the 18th century, the first institutions dedicated to the craft emerged. The four major miniature decorative painting schools are distinguished by various characteristics, such as the materials used, the preference for certain colors or subjects, technique or style. Regardless of these discrepancies, however, all of them have the same purpose: decorating objects created from papier-mâché (small chests, jewelry boxes, etc.), with tempera or oil paints, later varnished and known for their durability over time. The patience and dedication of the artists could extend the creation process of such an object from a few months to a year. Usually, the favorite subjects of miniature painting authors were inspired by folklore, fairy tales, or even the fabulous architecture of Russian monuments. Thus, we find stories and traditions also in the case of this lot ("The Story of the Dead Princess", "A Crimson Flower", "The Itinerant Seller"); famous architectural monuments: "The Cathedral of the Dormition" in Moscow, "The Golden Gate" in the city of Vladimir or traditional Russian objects, such as "Troika", which we can observe in the portrayal of a sleigh pulled by three horses.
