He addresses themes from universal legends and mythology, often sketching subjects such as life and death, childhood, youth or hope for rebirth, where his art appears understood as an eternal dream, but also as a relationship between human consciousness and cosmos, which is accentuated by a philosophical and poetic atmosphere and a mystical-romantic aesthetic. The major themes of his paintings are represented by female characters with a mythological aura, male characters depicted in acts of meditation, physical work or animals reminiscent of a hybrid between hornless unicorns and centaurs. In addition to these, the environment and backdrop of his paintings resemble the depths of an ocean or images that describe existence and survival on other planets. Most of his works are set in a fantastical space, a choice particularly determined by the use of blue, the dominant color in his creations, which confers the feeling of eternity. For him, the human figure is essential in his creation. Among the human figures, he preferred youth. Most of his characters are female figures depicted nude, resembling warriors and amazons who are about to go to battle. In many works, to accentuate the meaning of the general and universal symbol, the artist uses the repetition of figures, gestures, objects or animals, in the idea of engaging viewers in a colorful world, where fantasy and reality intertwine. Thus, under the symbol of these animals, Bălașa seeks a participation of forces that exceed the limits of humans. The most significant animals of his universe are dinosaurs, rams, horses or unicorns which are transfigured into imaginary and fantastic representations, where this motif can also be observed in the current work, a representation of a small size unicorn that is next to the other three female characters that make up the rest of the composition. The work was created in the 1970s and represents one of his recurring themes, with emphasis on the nude, animals and the fantastic space. The female characters are depicted nude and can be differentiated due to the fact that each of them has a different hair color. Thus, by how they are arranged, they seem to be in the setting of a council, a discussion, where both people and animals can communicate and coexist. In this way, Bălașa manages in his works to combine the fantastic elements with the central motif of the composition, beauty and reason. Each of his creations is a window towards his view of the world, full of dynamism and emotion, demonstrating a rare mastery in capturing and transmitting pure emotion through color and form.
