Ștefan Câlția studied at the School of Arts in Timișoara under the guidance of Professor Julius Podlipny, and then completed his studies at the “Nicolae Grigorescu” Institute of Fine Arts, under Corneliu Baba. The painting genre he addresses falls within the realist-fantastic area. He is inspired by the stories constructed by Pieter Bruegel and the complex compositions of Hieronymus Bosch. The elements that he integrates into his work are objects that carry meanings, objects - vestiges of memory, props that complete the scenography, coexisting harmoniously with carefully chosen plastic prints. His works highlight characters of a strangely delicate and disturbing, landscapes with herbs and fields as well as still natures that bring to mind the Flemish school. Within his works, Câlția assumes the role of storyteller in images and attributes a narrative function to his painting. The inclination towards values, tradition, and divinity is sometimes translated into one of his favorite themes such as flight or birds. He tends towards unusual choices, with small-sized characters, which he places in a wide space. In rendering his scenes, he reserves for his protagonists a central place on the canvas and allows them to float in an infinite universe for observing the entire action that is to unfold. From mistletoeproprietors to characters whose props are made up of flower bouquets, the artist pays attention to details and tries to catch the physiognomy of the portrayed as well as possible. In addition to the well-known characters with bouquets of flowers in their hands, most often, in his works, the central motif is constituted by the flight of birds. He opts for a vibrant chromatic and predominantly uses shades of green, blue or red. The world of spectacle in his creation initially appears in the form of carnival, parades. He adopts the moralizing sense of the proposed characters, illustrates the fascinating world of the circus, and begins to present it in the form of spectacle. Regarding the work at hand, it brings to the fore one of his recurring themes, namely the bird hunter, a motif we often find throughout his work. More precisely, in the works made in the '70s or '80s, he began to create works with monochrome backgrounds and unusual protagonists, but he revisits the motif later, thus laying the foundations of a complex cycle, where the parrot motif becomes increasingly well known. The work focuses on capturing two characters, a hunter and a parrot. The female character in the scene plays the role of the hunter who is about to catch the parrot. She has a circle, on the edge of which is a small parrot with shades of brown, yellow, and white. The color palette of the work is reduced to several shades of yellow and brown in the rendering of the parrot, but also in the clothing of the character, where yellow can be seen in the turban that is on the head. In the background, you can also see darker shades of brown and gray.
