PROVENANCE

old Romanian private collection, Czechia.

The 1920s brought even greater clarity to Ressu's stylistic vision: the drawing would become enclosed, the color palette would be reduced to only a few tones, and the brush strokes would cover compact areas. Together, these qualities contributed to the definition of a rigorous style, in which the painter performs a synthesis, emphasizing only what is essential in the representation of reality. In stark contrast with other painters - Petraşcu, Dărăscu, Steriadi, Tonitza - whose artistic vision relied on the complex elaboration of color expressiveness (interest in the pictorial), Ressu has the great merit of having introduced into Romanian painting the interest in body and objects, through the plasticity of the form. The cultivation of plasticity in his paintings is combined with the artist's attraction to the landscape motif, especially in the third decade of the 20th century, when Ressu will introduce the representation of the plastical forms of the body in the midst of nature. The great theme of the baigneuse enters Ressu's imaginary from the first period of creation, when he certainly would have seen the subject addressed in modern French painting by Cézanne, Matisse or Renoir.
