The Memorial Monument was erected by the Belgian authorities in honor of the allies who had fought against the Central Powers in the First World War. Although Belgium was neutral in 1914, it was attacked by Germany, occupied, and subjected to a regime of terror. Romania was also included in this memorial project. Emil Wilhelm Becker obtained the order to create the Romanian sarcophagus and some medals and plaques to illustrate the event. The pieces are signed on the plate by the artist.
