Living in modern Paris between 1917 and 1939, Theodor Pallady built his visual culture under the influence of literary symbolism, specific to a cosmopolitan and refined environment. His work from this period constructs an intimate painting - a lyricism of the interior and the familiar. In Pallady's creation, the exterior is almost absent; instead, the still nature and the female character inside represent the most favorable environments for symbolic interpretation. The present work depicts two female characters caught in a moment of conversational intimacy. The first is stretched out on a divan, in a relaxed position, occupying the main plane of the work. The model is presented as the central form through a diagonal line that traces the body from shoes to the hand in which she leisurely supports her head. The second character appears partially, in profile. The dialogue between the two is rendered through proximity and mutual orientation, a specific procedure of Pallady, who avoids direct narrative in favor of a close atmosphere, indicating the artwork's belonging in the cycles of the 1930s. Among these, we recall works such as "Confidences" or "Talking". The color palette is sober, with interior tones specific to the Dauphine Place studio, ochres, warm grays, faded greens, lacking ostentatious decorative effects. Inspired by Cézanne, Pallady constructs a free composition that distances from the faithful resemblance to nature, seeking to convey states of a subjective reality. The pictorial surface is articulated by the two characters, concentrating both the chromatic tension and the narrative sense. Thus, "Talking" represents a meditation on intimate communication as a pictorial state. The two characters do not dialogue for the viewer, but for themselves, and Pallady places us to the right of the decor, in the position of an uninvited witness, capturing a suspended moment in time. This scene takes place in an interior with a life of its own, which precedes and continues after the captured moment. Thus, Pallady captures an atmosphere, a moment in time where confidence and intimacy are born naturally, without being studied. (L.M.)
