The portrait was practiced by Camil Ressu throughout his entire career, but it did not manifest only as a standalone category, but most of the time it was integrated into a much more generous composition. Whether he chooses interiors or landscapes, the painter models a scenographic register that coordinates the background of these works where a context is offered to the model. If he depicted Luchian as thoughtful, from semi-profile, sitting on a chair ("Portrait of the painter Ștefan Luchian", 1912, Zambaccian Museum) or if he captured the Turks from Plevna as thoughtful, on the terrace of a cafe ("Turks at the cafe", 1913, M.N.A.R., inv. 8070), in the case of this work he applies the same compositional "recipe". The artist uses the scenography provided by the natural frame both for the valence of the context and for stylistic considerations, managing to offer the character a chromatic framing, using precisely the contrast of value.
