The Croatian abstract art after the Second World War was marked by the name of Edo Murtić. He was educated by Petar Dobrović in Belgrade, and by Ljubo Babić at the Fine Art Academy in Zagreb, participated in the National Liberation Struggle, and after the war, with his experiences from Paris and New York, he opened Croatian visual art to gestural and coloristic expression, and, consequently, abstraction. Equally skilled in landscape, cityscape, and abstract painting expression, Murtić gained great self-confidence in painting and composition over time. This can be fully seen on this oil painting on canvas from 1975. The grey background from the title is the setting in which the intense colour of the brush strokes stands out. However, what forms the structure of this composition and what dominates it are the massive black lines. They form the axes around which the coloristic gestures scatter in the space of the picture. This classic Murtić abstract canvas was painted with his characteristic ease and a convincing sense of composition. FG
