Juraj Dobrović is one of the fundamental Croatian representatives of op-art. He completed his degree in Economics and then Art History in 1961 in Zagreb, when he fully dedicated himself to visual creation. His opus, which includes geometric sculptures and reliefs, rotating objects, industrial, and graphic design, continues the tradition of geometric abstraction of the Exat 51 group. In the early 1960s, he began exhibiting in solo and group exhibitions, and by 1965, as part of New Tendencies 3, he presented his serigraphs, reliefs, and spatial constructions. In the early 1970s, he began to reduce geometric elements and emphasize the square as a fundamental module, limiting the color scale to black and white, thus aligning with the visual concept of minimalism. Over the years, Dobrović has increasingly simplified his works, making them increasingly minimalist. Leaving behind reliefs and sculptural design in space, he continued to deal with flat illusions in the spatial configuration of geometric shapes. This resulted in the creation of a series of paintings "Towards the Center", in which the artist plays with the illusion of movement of properly positioned black rectangles towards the center of the composition, always with the square as the foundation of all shapes.
