PROVENANCE

The work was created as an illustration for the magazine edition "Smilje i Bosilje," and was gifted by the author to the magazine's editor at the time, Mr. Krešimir Haluga.

Nives Kavurić Kurtović (Zagreb, 1938. – 2016.) was a brilliant painter of figurative-surreal compositions. Throughout her creative life, she persistently nurtured an expressive stylistic expression and with her characteristic morphology she has always questioned topics of the beyond and the conscious, the beautiful and the deformed, the external and internal world and man himself. She particularly nurtured drawing as the basis for her painting, so in the rich and valuable work of this artist and academic, we find numerous drawing and painting cycles that are characterized by the virtuosity of lines and a harmonious relationship between form and color. It is therefore no surprise that in addition to her decades of painting and pedagogical work at the Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts (1983-2007), she was often invited to illustrate the literary works of Croatian writers. These were mostly illustrations for children's books - fairy tales and stories - as well as for children's publications. For example, for the educational-entertaining magazine „Smilje i bosilje“ - the popular SMIB – in which she published dozens of illustrations from 1970 to 1983, including this drawing published in the first issue of SMIB on February 1, 1970.
