Research information

The work was exhibited at the exhibition "Gabrijel Jurkić: Lights and Colors of Croatian and Herzegovina Landscapes", Art Gallery, Croatian Cultural Center Založbe King Tomislav, in Čapljina, December 17, 2022 - January 15, 2023, and was reproduced in the exhibition catalog under the title "Autumn Mists", 1943, on p. 62, cat. no. 33.

In Gabriel Jurkić's painting, the motif of native Livno landscape dominates, painted in every season, and for all times, morning and daily, in the evening and on sunny days. From the mid-twenties to the late sixties of the last century when he stopped painting due to weakened vision, Jurkić was prolifically painting nature and its light sensations in countless of their manifestations. He subordinated his meticulously built impressionistic landscape to a realistic experience of nature as the alter ego of his own creative being of inexhaustible invention. The Autumn Landscape on display here, painted in 1943 in Sarajevo where he lived until his retreat to the Franciscan monastery Gorica in Livno (1956), was first exposed to the public at the exhibition "Gabriel Jurkić – lights and colors of Croatian and Herzeg-Bosnian landscapes" held in the Art Gallery in Čapljina (BiH) in 2023. In Jurkić's more than six-decades-long creative lifespan, other themes and motifs are also present, of course. For example, he achieved a respectable portion of sacred and portrait painting, and a series of Dubrovnik cityscapes. But the real truth is that he mostly devoted his painting fate to the landscapes of his native Livno. Rooted in a distinguished family of immigrants from the Croatian coastline, Jurkić - with his spiritual habitus and civilizational context, educated in Zagreb and Vienna (1906-1911.) and with exhibition presence in Croatian art life from 1911. to 1934. he is not only an uncontroversial participant of Croatian modern art, but also a painter who greatly enriched it.
