Safet Zec is a renowned contemporary painter from Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was born in 1943, in Rogatica (BiH), and was educated at the Fine Arts Academies in Sarajevo and Belgrade. After the outbreak of war in 1992, he moved to Italy, where he has had a noted career. He has been accepted there as a significant contemporary painter, and was even presented in the Venice Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2024. This painting is one of the numerous tributes the artist has made to Venice, the city he has chosen as his second home. The tonally articulated watercolor depicts a simple portal, perhaps the entrance to one of Venice's sotoportegi. Ribboned of ornaments and reduced to basic geometry, this motif provides the author with the opportunity to depict the effects of light through his tonal formation. This is a procedure very dear to this painter, and he carries it out here with unabashed pleasure. The light that Safet Zec depicts on this portal and stairway also gives it a special, meditative value, showing how the sun, momentarily, revealed beauty in an everyday, urban detail. FG
