Antun Masle (1919 - 1967) belongs to the group of Dubrovnik colorists, and on his paintings he often achieves attractive, shimmering effects of colors with small strokes and layered construction. In order to emphasize them, he does not shy away from the expressive possibilities of contrasts, and so sometimes he uses a darker background on which such accents will stand out, or he highlights contours with a black line of free form. These procedures are also seen in this painting which depicts a figure in a colorful costume. Its title refers to the European carnival tradition, extremely alive in the Mediterranean. The Carnival time is a period of the awakening of vital (perhaps subconscious) forces through practices of dressing, behavior and dancing, with roots in ancient cultures. Hence, this figure in Masle's painting also, with its appearance and nature, associates with some shamanic ritual. FG
