The first Croatian trained graphic artist and the most famous mariner Menci Clement Crnčić (Bruck na Muri, 1865 - Zagreb, 1930) perfected his skill in Vienna and Munich. With Bela Čikoš Sesia, he founded a private painting school which would develop into today's Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts. In the first phase of Crnčić's work, portraits and works influenced by the Munich realistic school prevailed. Then he began to create marinas and coastal landscapes, and the sea remained a constant motif in his repertoire. The oil on canvas is signed in the lower right corner. It is a typical Crnčić marina with a vertically set composition at sunset. On the left side, the sea and sky dominate, on the right a rock, achieving a contrast between the rigidity and enclosure of the rocks and the openness of the sea. There is a contrast between the wrinkled sea hitting the rocks and the calm horizon. The sun is not seen directly, but its reflection on the sea surface is depicted. Orange, golden brush strokes on the sea contribute to the fairy-tale depiction and realism of the sunset. The painting represents a typical example of Crnčić's marinas: a combination of observing nature and a feeling for light. The artist does not only depict the landscape, but also the dynamics of the sea and the atmosphere of the moment, which makes his landscapes one of the important contributions to the development of modern Croatian landscape painting.
