Ivu Šebalj (1912. – 2002.) Croatian art history finds it hard to categorize into some frames of creativity. Most often, we speak of the transformation of modernism experiences. In his oeuvre, we find both shattered figuration and lyrical abstraction. This picture certainly falls into the latter category, dominated by a green shape on a light background. It is also supported by the richness of other colors that break through the background, creating undefined shapes. Here, Šebalj has demonstrated a great understanding of coloristic relationships and how coloristic abstraction works in its quieter, muted incarnation. Interpreters also reach for associations that appeal to the painter's personality averse to loud sensation, or to the contemplative nature of his paintings. Such interpretation can also be applied to this picture, and if we look a little wider, we will remember how the very beginning of abstract creation is associated with the possibilities that fine art has to enrich a space, or to create a harmonious effect on human emotions. All shapes in this picture seem to decompose, deconstruct and reassemble (according to, perhaps, unexpected systems and rules, but still with deep inner logic) with the aim of achieving that call.
