Although he is recognized as the most representative Romanian portraitist, portraying high officials, state leaders, being the artist of elites wherever he lived, France, Switzerland, USA, he also evoked thematic and landscaped still life. Among the few artists who cultivated the poetics of black, the dark scene became a universal background for almost all his works. The importance the impressionists attributed to light, the artist attributed to darkness. At the beginning of his career, the artist's theme was tributary to Grigorescu, but gradually he detached from any influence, building up a strongly individualized style. Starting with 1906, he participated in a series of exhibitions, the first being at the Official Salon in Paris, followed by Artistic Youth and Jubilee Exhibition where he won the gold medal. In 1911, he received an Honorable Mention at the Official Salon in Paris for the painting "Gypsies on the Road". In 1936, the artist was appointed as a painting professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest, and in 1941 he becomes the rector of the Academy of Arts.
