In 1908, as he returned home from his studies, precisely at the end of the peasant riots, he would recurrently execute works illustrating country life. He spends a lot of time in the country side, which will also contribute to the influence of the picturesque motif in his creation. He has a particular inclination towards the understanding of country life, which he would not embellish, nor idealise. He is preoccupied with rendering authenticity, therefore he would depict sunburnt faces, bodies weakened by work, or maternity in the context of working the field. He synthesises the psychology of an entire nation, by reducing both characters and shapes in general to its essential components. His compositions are balanced and he keeps the real proportions, as he thoroughly builds his drawings, subduing the colour. He did not allow himself to be influenced by the artistic movements he had studied in school, but instead he remained faithful to popular art and the plastic rhythms executed in a realistic way.
