Mazilu does not shy away from transposing the ugly into the aesthetic, even turning it into genuine art, this process becoming the epitome of his entire creation. His works sum up the fusion between abstract painting and tough realism, which the artist masterfully adopts. He paints the fantastic and mechanically transforms abstract constructions into harmonious structures. He creates profound metaphors destined to humankind and suggests a psychological narrative of an amazing expressive strength. The characters imagined by Mazilu reflect the sensitive aesthetic of Renaissance painter Bruegel, as they become hybrid, paradoxical beings, whose humanity is only partially recognisable. The artist emphasizes body shape and facial expressions, drawing inspiration from Greek sculpture when contouring his iconic figures. His protagonists enjoy a carefully studies pantomime, so that they are often engaged in theatrical actions, such as the characters of an anti-Commedia dell'Arte. The distorted anatomy of the characters imagined by the artist simultaneously incites and repels the observer. As if gone through a sepia-coloured filter, Mazilu's works become stances of unquestionable visual drama, defying the laws of nature.
