Vlad Olariu's work encompasses themes such as the visual and conceptual relationships between sculpture, nature and architecture, the status of sculpture as a monument and an object that incorporates ideological burden (from the rhetoric of heroism to the coagulation of collective, national or other identities) and the parodic questioning of the sublime from the perspective of a soft, postmodernist-inspired deconstruction. His sculptures are both deceptively ironic and unpretentiously serious, tensely merging figurative elements connoting monumentality and "base" or prefabricated materials with an air of apparent banality. Thus, they are works with which one can interact, alternately or concurrently, as questions about the solemn and commemorative character with which sculpture has been culturally invested by modern European civilization, or as endeavors to access historical moments from the past, with the aim of discussing conflicts of values that substantially shape the contemporary political-cultural (and individual) context.
