The coin marks the liberation of Moldova across the Prut River from under Soviet occupation. The towns of Chernivtsi and Kishinev were liberated on 6 and 16 July 1941, while Cetatea Albă was liberated on 26 July, the enemy being banished beyond the borders of the homeland. Bukovina and Bessarabia had been occupied following the ultimatum addressed by the Soviet Union to Romania on 26 June 1940.
