tempera and gold foil on carved wood, 60 x 34 cm, 60 × 34 cm

On the golden background of the icon is represented the Mother of God with Christ Child, as empress wearing a golden crown. She holds the child rendered standing on her left arm and, in the right hand, holds the sceptre which has the shape of a rod with golden flowers. The Child Jesus, as Emperor and High Priest, wears imperial robes and a crown on his head. The faces painted according to the tradition, have models made with relatively sudden passages from the shadow painted in greenish-brown towards the lighted parts, painted in ochre and pink. The icon is bordered by a rich frame sculpted and gold plated which characterizes the Greek icons from the 16th century, with a higher rate in the 17th century. The frame has a pedestal form in the lower part, which supports two columns, on which an arc is fixed. Above it, the rich canopy sculpted with golden vegetal motives is crowned with the bicephalic vulture motive, frequently used by the Cantacuzino family here, and subsequently taken over by Constantin Brâncoveanu.
