The Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and the Culture of the Romanian People (ASTRA) was founded in October 1861 in Sibiu under the leadership of a committee consisting of Andrei Şaguna as president, Timotei Cipariu as vice-president, and George Bariţiu as secretary. The Association advocated for the preservation of the national identity of Romanians in the Habsburg Empire and then the Austro-Hungarian through a culture and literature in the Romanian language. It had branches (departments) in all the counties of Transylvania. The specimen retains the original main cover on which there is a stamped ex-libris of the Association, the Şercaia department.
