Dimitrie I. Ghica, born in 1848, was the first child of the leader and liberal politician Ion Ghica, bey of Samos. An engineer and diplomat, he was the first translator of Hamlet into Romanian, a valuable translator of the Greek classics, and was the minister plenipotentiary of Romania in Constantinople. The photographs were taken by him during this diplomatic mission and capture aspects from the Greek islands, from Constantinople and from his travels in the empire.
