Godina 1951. važna je za hrvatsku poslijeratnu umjetnost: tada Aleksandar Srnec, zajedno s Ivanom Piceljem i Božidarom Rašicom, osniva grupu EXAT 51 (Eksperimentalni atelje), koja se, u tada dominantnoj klimi socijalističkog realizma, otvoreno zalaže za legitimnost apstraktne umjetnosti te za jednaku vrijednost “čiste” i “primijenjene” umjetnosti.
