Santa Claus is part of Andy Warhol's "Myths" series, which exemplifies humanity's attraction to the powerful symbols and motifs of his time. Most of the images in the series are taken from 1950s television or Hollywood movies. They portray the universal vision of the once captivating and dominant American past. Other pieces included in the series are beloved children's characters such as Mickey Mouse, Howdy Doody, as well as fictional figures such as Dracula, the Wicked Witch of Cest and Uncle Sam. It has been said that Warhol regarded each of these characters as facets of his personality.
