Seen in retrospect, Nicolae Maniu's artistic development spans the history of painting from the classics to 20th century art, with the ease of an experienced director, accustomed to summoning characters, objects, and perspectives to give shape to his artistic thoughts. Maniu's works illustrate a world in search of balance, a world hidden in metaphors, constantly revealing itself, giving the viewer the opportunity to decipher its mysteries. The correspondence between the real and the fantastic can also be found in his paintings created during the communist regime, in landscapes that evoke the seasons and people's work, with a deep sense of love for the country. After leaving the country, the themes of his works become more complex, their expressive force more intense in exploring the mystery of the world and life. An impressive series, made after leaving the country, is that of the studio universe, admirably controlled compositionally and chromatically. Through the trompe l'oeil technique, which he skilfully masters, Maniu seems to work with infinity. The metallic foil, which enhances both light and opacity, wrapping but also exposing contrastingly, is emblematic of the derision of consumption, but also dramatically underlines situations of composition. Nicolae Maniu asks questions about the meaning of existence, invites to reflection, although no existential anguish is apparent in his sober and impressive paintings.
