acrylic and collage on canvas, 60 x 50 cm, 60 × 50 cm, signed, dated and entitled on the reverse, with black, "Beaver, Flowers for Agamemnon, 2021"

Flowers for Agamemnon is a work from the latest series by the artist Beaver. The title, an anagram, is inspired by the famous novel "Flowers for Algernon", a science fiction story in which Algernon is a laboratory mouse who has undergone surgery to enhance his intelligence by artificial means. In antithesis to the futuristic subject of the novel, the current work, in a play on words, takes the name of the great mythological king Agamemnon. The work innovates the contemporary pictorial style by playing with this contrast between the classical, mannerist, rigorous style and the naive, pop, even playful one. The contrast becomes even more evident in the chromatic play between the black and white pictorial background and the strong, vibrant colours of the coloured flowers. The artist's innovation also comes from superimposing a simple technique of collage on a painting.
