Genadi Gatev is a visual artist, cultural scholar, and curator. He works in the fields of painting, photography, video, and installation.
In his works, the artist explores the stereotypes of human perceptions and sensations—often connected to or provoked by pre-established social, cultural, political, or ethnic norms. By examining this issue from different perspectives, Genadi Gatev questions the validity of such normativity and compels the viewer to focus on its influence on human behavior.
The artist seeks the inner opposition between everyday actions and pre-established social paradigms. He analyzes the universal postulates imposed by the contemporary global world, which often generate tensions that are difficult to overcome. At the same time, we are left with few options for choice. The individual must live by accepting the “correct” incorrectness of these norms and rules—without questioning their essence and function—or else face complete marginalization.
