PROVENANCE
30s-50s, collection of Romanian diplomat Basil Stoica (1889 - 1959), a close friend of Thomas Masaryk and Ionel I.C. Brătianu, who spoke 14 foreign languages, fought for the founding and establishment of Greater Romania, was president of the Romanian National League in America in 1918, minister plenipotentiary in Bulgaria and Albania (1930-1936), The Netherlands (1937-1939), general secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1939-1945), negotiator of the cause of Romania as co-belligerent country in 1946 at the Paris Peace Conference; he died in Jilava after 9 years of detention; the collection was seized from the diplomat's family in 1977 by the National Museum of Art of Romania; in 2009, after the fall of the communist regime, following a long series of trials, it was restituted to the diplomat's heirs.
