A matriarchal society who values independence, the Bakongo is the largest tribe in the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo) and is a significant minority in neighbouring countries. The total population of the tribe has been estimated at about 18 million people worldwide. Kongo masks are rare objects. They are exposed only during significant events, for example special initiation ceremonies or legislative assemblies. The object is extremely well crafted, painted with a mixture of soil, kaolin and exotic wood ash.
