Câmpul covorului este animat de scena închinării drapelului oto-man în faţa regelui Carol I, drapel predat armatei române ca semn al înfrângerii armatei otomane şi ocuparea cetăţii Plevna. Covorul reia compoziţia tabloului cu acelaşi titlu, pictat de austriacul Friedrich Kaiser.
