Research information

The superior element of the arm is separated from the rest of the sculpture by a joining system.

Born in Paris into a family of intellectuals, Celine Emilian will study at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière under the careful guidance of Antoine Bourdelle. The meeting with this artist will prove to be prolific in the economy of the entire creation of Celine Emilian, who will second her master in the creation of some monumental artworks (the relief of Saint-Rei church or Marseille Theatre frieze). The artist debuts in 1922 in Paris and continues to exhibit constantly in the French frenzy, until 1939. She works with marble, gypsum or bronze and assumes a heteroclite thematic repertoire. In her work, the feminine presence will have a central place - she sculpts portraits or statues in natural size (Ladies series) and approaches historical, mythological or religious themes. She will often travel abroad and use these trips as inspiration. She also exhibits in the country, at the Official Salon, or within the Artistic Youth. Regardless of the theme or technique, the artist is interested in the expressive transfiguration of the subject in her creations. Her sculptural design will be profoundly influenced by the temperate modernist approach of the master from Paris. Bourdelle's manner is transcribed, in the artist's work, in a mix of the monumentality of classical sculpture and medieval plasticity.
