Gheorghe Naum stands out particularly as an engraver, but his artistic probity will also come out in painting and graphics. In the specialized criticism he has often been mentioned as a follower of the writer Panait Istrati. They both captured the Danube colour of Romanian art. Naum reaches to the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest in a moment when school was at a turning point. Replacing the teacher G.D. Mirea with his master Camil Ressu abandoned academism and promoted realist art. From his teacher, Camil Ressu, and from his good friend, the painter Ion Theodorescu-Sion, the artist will draw untapped sources of pictorial inspiration. He will paint mostly the moments of the day such as the morning or evening, but cloudy days, with their diffuse light and harmonious intertwining tones appear most often in his work. Fluvial landscapes, in which the nuances of water and banks are carefully blended, are not infrequently subject to social themes. The predilection for humanism is instilled in him by his teacher Camil Ressu, so Naum's works will be animated by the presence of human figures and will capture complex typologies, especially in the work field. The people from the harbour meet in the artist's work, preparing traps, unloading nets or preparing food. Naum's creation, regardless the environment in which it is created, is abundant in depictions of native landscapes and social themes. With a special ability to assimilate information, the artist will study painting, graphics and sculpture. Excellent drawer, he will succeed in lending his painting the malleability of the line. In his work prevails greys, smoky blue, decorative rhythms and carefully studied compositions. Gheorghe Naum remains faithful to his origins, establishing definitively in Brăila after graduating the Art Academy dedicating real frescoes to ports and fluvial landscapes. He founded in 1939, with other artists, "Lower Danube" group; and in 1950, he contributes at the establishment of the Pinacoteca of Brăila and he remained in charge of it until 1954.
